No One Can Do You
#4 - NO ONE CAN DO YOU
There is truly no voice exactly like yours. Every Person…Every Voice…is created to be different, unique, and special. Every person and every voice including yours is also created to change, to grow. NO ONE CAN DO YOU.
According to Yale Baby School, “Since the maternal voice is audible in utero, an infant starts to recognize their mother’s voice from the third trimester,” (https://babyschool.yale.edu/does-my-baby-recognize-me/#). Our voices are certainly prime aspects to what makes us…us. NO ONE CAN DO YOU. Key to this relationship of mothers and babies and more globally, of voicers to listeners, is recognition. Whether it be to a person, a feeling, or a brand, recognition paves our way to be heard.
Our voices are uniquely tethered to our hearing. Our own voices are molded after our earliest models. Our mothers, fathers, grandparents, older siblings, other close relatives, neighbors…all contribute as those voices we hear most often from the very beginning. NO ONE CAN DO YOU. Be it the Australian outback, the Amalfi coast, the Hungarian capital, the English countryside, the banks of the Nile River, the New York high-rises, or Montana’s big sky country, our location in our younger years, most especially, is an instrumental influence to our voices.
My son is an older teen. His voice went through big noticeable changes during the last six months. One day he would speak with that sweet child-like voice I’d come to love. The next day, he would open his mouth to speak and cracking sounds would come instead of words. Then these deeper tones would come out of his mouth. Then the next day, it would be back to the younger voice we all knew. Oh the hills and valleys of the teen years. NOW, that sounds like a post for another kind of blog or a book title. But, back to this post. His voice has evened out now, and it’s surprisingly, quite deep. NO ONE CAN DO YOU. While it’s still changing, the changes are more subtle.
Every experience in our VO journey can lend itself to that subtle change of growth. Just another brushstroke on the masterpiece in the works, that is our voice. Coaching, an acting class, feedback, time, auditions, reading aloud, practicing script reads, group participation…All work together to give us this experience that crafts our unique voices. Believe me, NO ONE CAN DO YOU. Get out there, and do it.
